There’s a new and trending market for the resale of maternity clothes. Maternity clothing isn’t worn for very long, that makes it perfect for the circular fashion industry!
Resellers are a tribe of new mom entrepreneurs who were frustrated with the price and selection of maternity clothing in retail stores. I started HEA because I wanted to save women money and given them more options for their maternity clothes.
So How Does Resale Help You Build Your Maternity Closet For Almost Free?
Think of your maternity wardrobe as a rental. Maternity resale is creating a circular economy that’s helping women save money when they buy their maternity clothes and puts money back in their pockets when they sell their clothing with a reseller like Happily Ever After Maternity and Preggy.ca.
Here’s our guide to the five best maternity pieces to buy second-hand this summer. You’ll look great, feel great, and you’ll save money! Find out why it’s awesome when someone else pays the full price first!
5 pieces of Maternity Clothing You Should Buy Secondhand this Summer
#1 Skirts
Skirts are cute, but you need to be in the mood to wear a skirt. Knee-length, mini or maxi, resale offers a better selection than retail. Skirts need to be worn for years before they start to show any wear. You can find some great like new skirts shopping resale.
- You can save up to 70% off the retail price.
- Mini and knee-length skirts are often in like-new condition. Some maxi skirts can be as well, but this style tends to get more wear.
- The environment benefits as well. Think of the carbon emissions that were saved because you purchased a piece that was already made and already on the same continent as you!
On April 14th 2020 when prices were researched, Old Navy had no maternity skirts in stock.

#2 Dresses
How many times have you bought a dress for a specific occasion and only worn it once? Pregnancy is no different. Office parties, weddings, baby shower, photoshoots, anniversary dinner. Many dresses get purchased for a specific event and only make it out of the closet once during pregnancy. Most resale dresses look brand new!
- You’ll often find resale maternity dresses that are still new with tags!
- You can save up to 50% off retail!
- These dresses are one of a kind! You’re more likely to attend an event and find a dress “twinsie” if you shop from a big box maternity retailer. Resale almost guarantees you’ll be the only belle with the gorgeous dress.
- The environment benefits because the dress gets shipping to you whole. The raw materials aren’t being shipped to a distributor, then a factory, the dress itself is not traveling across the world to a distribution centre than a retail store.

#3 Swimwear
Hanging out in the water is a great way to feel weightless and to relieve aches and pains. Swimwear is also a staple piece in your wardrobe if you’re a beach goer!
- Buying second hand, even if the swimsuit is still new with tags, which happens a lot, you will save you a ton of money.
- Your selection is limited compared to other clothing, but swimwear is a specialized piece of maternity clothing you won’t wear as often as the rest of your wardrobe. Swimwear is a great piece to save money on.
- The environment benefits because the synthetic fabrics are being re-worn instead of reproduced. This saves water in two ways. The water needed for the production of the fabric, and the pollution that goes into the water from the dying process.
Note for swimwear, most of our resale swimwear as of April 14 2020 is new with tags!

#4 Capris and Shorts
Capris are a great transition piece you can wear in the spring, then in the summer to an air-conditioned office, and as mosquito covering in the evenings. You can take them out of your closet again in the fall when the mornings start cool but the afternoons are warm. Shorts have a limited useful life. Depending on your due date, you may only need shorts for a few months of your pregnancy.
- You can save up to 60% off retail when buying shorts and capris second-hand
- You have more panel options. Retailers tend to pick one or two panels styles for their maternity bottoms in one seasons. With resale you get to choose from pocket panels, low panels, smooth fit panels, fold down panels, or no panels at all. Retail can’t give you that kind of versatility! You can read more about your panel options on our blog.
- The environmental benefits of buying these pieces second-hand are enormous! Think of the raw materials and water, and carbon emissions that were saved because you purchased a piece that was already made!

#5 Workwear
It’s expensive to build a professional wardrobe for a 5-6 day work week and a wardrobe for your casual and weekend needs. Building a maternity wardrobe is not like building your pre-pregnancy wardrobe. The pieces you have now you’ve been collecting over time, your maternity wardrobe needs to be built within a three to five-month period.
- polyester blouses and pants seem to last forever! They hold up well to multiple washes and make great second-hand pieces that will look like they were purchased new!
- Dress pants. With resale you can try different panel styles and pick the style you find the most comfortable. You can then select your maternity bottoms based of your preferred panel style.
- Resale will save you a bunch of money when it comes to your professional needs. You can have an outfit for every day of the week and still have money for great casual clothes.
- If you work with kids, resale is a great option. If you stain a $20 blouse it won’t hurt as much as if you bought it new for $59.98!
- The environment benefits because the synthetic fabrics are being re-worn and washed multiple times which releases less microplastics into our waterways. Some studies have found that certain fabrics release more micro plastics into our waterways when washed when they are new.
